Flash drives are often used in products that operate on low power and those which may have to undergo harsh conditions. Flash memory is non-volatile and hence flash drives do not need to be backed up with batteries. Flash memory is solid state. This implies that nothing in it is mechanical. Everything is purely electronic. Flash memory has a grid of columns and rows and a cell having two transistors at each point of intersection in the grid. A thin oxide layer separates the transistors in each pair. One transistor in the pair is known as a floating gate while the other is known as a control gate. The floating gate can hold electric charge. It is in electrical isolation due to the oxide layer separating it from the control gate. So, any electrons placed on the floating gate stay on it. This makes flash memory non-volatile. The working of flash memory is precisely the addition and removal of electrons to and from the floating gate.
The average Hard Drive uses magnetivity to turn tiny segments of a large plate to either magnetized, or demagnetized. Computer information is processed and stored as 1's and 0's, so magnetically, magnetized would be a 1 and demagnetized would be a 0. For example, an F in binary is 01000110. So, on a hard drive, 8 tiny switches would be set to "off, on, off, off, off, on, on, off" to store a single letter "F" (as well as more code to decide WHERE to store the letter f).
A hard drive stores data onto a platter that is essentially a magnetic disk. There is an arm that goes over the platter and as you save stuff to your hard drive information is saved onto that platter.
Keeping this real simple: data is stored magnetically on a set of platters attached to a spindle which spins at a very high speed. A platter is analogous to a DVD, imagine several of those sitting on a shaft, and each one has its own read/write head (which is kind of similar to the arm and pickup of a record player, but way more high tech). The data is written to the platter using electrical pulses through the read/write head to arrange the magnetic surface in a particular way, reading the data back is a matter of sensing the magnetic patterns on the platter and translating them back into meaningful data. When a stream of data is written to the hard drive, it doesn't necessarily all get written to the same platter, it can be written to across several platters at once, this helps increase the speed of the read/write operations. To save data a lot faster than a HDD (Hard Drive Disk), retrieve it fast and delete it. I mention deletion because when you uninstall or delete something on a hard drive it doesn't actually delete it there is still is there until it is over-written, SSD doesn't do this it in fact just deletes it when you want it deleted.
SSD also work differently to HDD in that they aren't a disk they are instead a solid block of data like a USB flash drive.
Of course the purpose varies depending on what type of drive you want like a RAM based SSD is extremely fast however it is very similar to RAM because it will delete everything when the power goes off.
