Flash drives are often used in products that operate on low power and those which may have to undergo harsh conditions. Flash memory is non-volatile and hence flash drives do not need to be backed up with batteries. Flash memory is solid state. This implies that nothing in it is mechanical. Everything is purely electronic. Flash memory has a grid of columns and rows and a cell having two transistors at each point of intersection in the grid. A thin oxide layer separates the transistors in each pair. One transistor in the pair is known as a floating gate while the other is known as a control gate. The floating gate can hold electric charge. It is in electrical isolation due to the oxide layer separating it from the control gate. So, any electrons placed on the floating gate stay on it. This makes flash memory non-volatile. The working of flash memory is precisely the addition and removal of electrons to and from the floating gate.

The average Hard Drive uses magnetivity to turn tiny segments of a large plate to either magnetized, or demagnetized. Computer information is processed and stored as 1's and 0's, so magnetically, magnetized would be a 1 and demagnetized would be a 0. For example, an F in binary is 01000110. So, on a hard drive, 8 tiny switches would be set to "off, on, off, off, off, on, on, off" to store a single letter "F" (as well as more code to decide WHERE to store the letter f).
A hard drive stores data onto a platter that is essentially a magnetic disk. There is an arm that goes over the platter and as you save stuff to your hard drive information is saved onto that platter.

Keeping this real simple: data is stored magnetically on a set of platters attached to a spindle which spins at a very high speed. A platter is analogous to a DVD, imagine several of those sitting on a shaft, and each one has its own read/write head (which is kind of similar to the arm and pickup of a record player, but way more high tech). The data is written to the platter using electrical pulses through the read/write head to arrange the magnetic surface in a particular way, reading the data back is a matter of sensing the magnetic patterns on the platter and translating them back into meaningful data. When a stream of data is written to the hard drive, it doesn't necessarily all get written to the same platter, it can be written to across several platters at once, this helps increase the speed of the read/write operations. To save data a lot faster than a HDD (Hard Drive Disk), retrieve it fast and delete it. I mention deletion because when you uninstall or delete something on a hard drive it doesn't actually delete it there is still is there until it is over-written, SSD doesn't do this it in fact just deletes it when you want it deleted.

SSD also work differently to HDD in that they aren't a disk they are instead a solid block of data like a USB flash drive.

Of course the purpose varies depending on what type of drive you want like a RAM based SSD is extremely fast however it is very similar to RAM because it will delete everything when the power goes off.

There are many types of solid state memory, each works differently.

  • Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) - an addressable array of flipflop circuits
  • Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) - an addressable array of capacitors
  • Dynamic Shift Register Memory (DSRM) - a very long shift register composed of capacitor stages
  • Masked Programmed Read Only Memory (ROM) - an addressable array of transistors, programmed at the factory by modifying the chip masks to leave out unwanted transistors
  • Fusible Link Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) - an addressable array of transistors and fuses, programmed by the user by blowing the fuses connecting the unwanted transistors (programming was frequently unreliable with as much as 10% to 15% of chips failing during programming)
  • UltraViolet Programmable Read Only Memory (UVPROM) - an addressable array of floating gate transistors, programmed by the user by forcing electrons into the floating gates of the unwanted transistors which disabled them in normal read operations, erased by the user by exposure to ultraviolet light which allowed the electrons captured in the floating gates to escape, the first reusable/reprogrammable form of solid state Read Only Memory (also the manufacturer could completely test them by programming different test data patterns and erasing them, making sure that the parts were good and erased before shipment to customers)
  • Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) - an addressable array of floating gate transistors, programmed by the user by forcing electrons into the floating gates of the unwanted transistors which disabled them in normal read operations, erased by the user by forcing electrons out the floating gates of the wanted transistors which reenabled them in normal read operations, unlike UVPROM an EEPROM did not have to be completely erased to be reused so errors and bugs were much easier to fix after being found nor did EEPROM have to be removed from the circuit board to be erased and reprogrammed as UVPROMs did (however the programming was still much slower than reading as it is hard to force electrons either into or out of the floating gates)
  • Flash Memory (FLASH) - an improved version of Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory using multiple large "sector" buffers to speed up apparent access time, the computer could write and read the contents of a "sector" buffer at the same speeds it could its ordinary Random Access Memory, while programming the actual Flash Read Only Memory was still much slower than reading it was the multiple "sector" buffers allowed the computer to continue to write more data instead of having to wait for the programming to complete before writing more, FLASH eventually replaced all earlier forms of Programmable Read Only Memory and also came to be used as a hard disk replacement (e.g. USB thumb drive, CompactFlash card, SD card, Solid State Disk)
