In most if not all thermostats you place the "pill" side in the block. this allows for the pill to compress the spring when it heats up opening the valve to allow water to flow through the rest of the cooling system.

How to change thermostat: Drain coolant by removing drain plug on radiator. Locate lower radiator hose and follow it to engine block. Pull the hose from engine block to expose the fitting/thermostat cover. This fitting is held on with two 10mm bolts. Remove to expose thermostat.

Follow the bottom hose comming from your radiator to where it connects to the engine block, u will see the housing that normally looks like it sits on top of the block, the thermostat is located inside this housing. its inside the bottom hose of the radiator, not the top.
locate the upper radiator hose. follow it from the top right side of the radiator to the engine block. remove the hose from that block , then remove three screws so that little block can be removed where you'll find the thermostat inside. clean the old gasket off both sides of the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat and gasket... dont forget to use a sealant around the edges of the block and the thermostat housing before securing
