Technology improves at an exponential rate because it incorporates all technology that came before. Technology is not necessarily only "electronics, computers, etc." or even inventions of any kind. Technology is at its most basic simply information that allows the user to change the efficiency of anything operating within his environment, including the user himself, including the user's brain, Biology, and function in the world.

People get new ideas and they are often inspired by technology or need to create new technology to achieve their objective. Answers become questions.

Another factor is something called "planned obsolescence" This is a business strategy in which a product is intentionally designed to become obsolete after a period of time. Technology companies use this to encourage customers to buy the "latest and greatest" version of a product rather than staying with the version they already bought.

We are all paranoid enough without the old concept of "planned obsolescence" let's change that to "unplanned discovery" Progress usually implies CHANGE. Change can mean more that different, it can mean better. The more we learn, the more tools we have in our tool box. A hammer, saw and screwdriver can only build so much. An electric screwdriver, circular saw and an good crescent wrench set is capable of so much more. These new tools don't make the old ones obsolete, but they do open to doors to new and better ways. They also pave the road to new possibilities. New technology rarely if ever is born fully developed. It needs to be nurtured and encouraged to grow to it's full potential--kinda like most humans.

Technology keeps advancing for a number of reasons.

1. In a capitalist system, things are driven by profits. As the profits decline, or better, to prevent profits from declining, money is put into research and development to produce better products that meet current and projected needs. If new stuff was not being produced, companies would have a hard time staying in business since it would make no sense to produce beyond a replacement level.

2. People tend not to be satisfied. Part of that is human nature, and part of that is due to advertising. Some people like to feel an edge over other people, so they have to have the newer, faster, more advanced, etc.

3. As companies, the government, the medical community and the military have more needs, the better technology there is for everyone. Most doing the research do it for those with special interests and a lot of money to throw into research to get what they want. But once that research is made public or is sold to other companies, it can be channeled into things with more mainstream appeal. An example is cosmetic surgery. Where it got its start was from advances made at the end of WWII. As many soldiers returned with severe injuries, gross disfigurement, missing limbs, etc., surgeons had to develop skills and techniques to treat all these casualties of war. But what happens when all these highly skilled surgeons who did wonders for people wounded in war have a substantial drop in patients? They had to do something if they wanted to live at the same standards all those costly surgeries afforded them, so they moved onto healthy patients who wanted to improve their appearance.

4. Technology tends to advance in clusters and seemingly unrelated fields can advance based off of advances in other fields. For instance, let's say there are better batteries. That will likely mean there are better capacitors too. Better capacitors could then mean better memory chips. Better memory chips could also mean better hard drives.

Or take better research involving semiconductors and display technologies. As laptop computers got better and had better displays, it didn't take long until the laptop monitors developed into newer types of desktop monitors and televisions. As the demand for laptops increased, that meant that their displays and the technology used to produced them became more mature and reduced in cost. As a result, it was feasible to develop desktop monitor and televisions using the same technology.
