It is very important. When a Computer starts up, the Operating System gets loaded into the Memory. Once every while, the System checks the Memory to quickly access certain programs, only if that program has been loaded into Memory.

Buying Memory for your Computer also increases the speed at which your system may perform, or rather, load programs. More Memory means more space for your system to process with. [NOTE: Not talking about Storage Space, but system cache.]

A computer has to follow a set of instructions called a program. If it is asked to find the solution of a particular question then the information or instructions must be stored somewhere.it would be stored in one of the two types of computer memory called main memory and secondary memory.

It's important to understand the difference between between memory and storage.

Data storage mediums such as hard drives retain programs. Memory is where the data & programs loaded from the storage medium is processed.

Think of it this way, youre in a book library. It contains hundreds of books on it's shelves. They are not being read currently, they are in storage.

You sit down at a table. The table is only big enough to read one book at a time. So you get a book from the shelves.

Part way through your reading you want to open up another book but your desk is only big enough to read the one book. So you have to mark where you were in the first book and go get the new book. Your old book is returned to the library.

You read through the new book, but then it cross references to the first book, you have to go through the rigmarole again to get back to where you were in the first book, and so it goes on. Obvioulsy if you had a bigger desk you could put more books on the desk, and if the library were bigger you could store more books and have more choice.

Now consider that you are the CPU, the books are the programs, the library is your hard drive, and your desk is the memory in the computer.

You can see that having a bigger memory means you can use more programs at once, and its more efficient because you dont have to keep running to the hard drive (library) all the time to swap books. You (the CPU) can get more work done faster and more efficiently.

Memory (or RAM) is used as a fast-access area of the computer. The hard-drive is limited as to how fast it can spin. The speed restricts the rate at which it can process data. RAM is much faster - making it more sensible to load programs and data into memory while the computer is running.

What is primary memory?

Memory is a loose term when it comes to computers. Memory can mean one of two things that are both primary and absolutely necessary to run a computer. One is RAM, which is the smaller memory that helps with computer performance. Without it, the computer will not start up at all because the RAM is used for essential backround tasks. The other memory is HDD memory (hard drives). This memory is used to store information that does not need to be accessed instantaneously. HDD memory is used to store the operating system of a computer, as well as other information such as programs and documents. There is no "primary" memory, in a computer, as it can mean two different things that are both invaluable.
