If by "active" you mean being on a computer to see if it is ON a network? Basically, if you have an IP number in the network settings on the computer then your Ethernet or wireless port is active and open. On a Mac to disable or make a different network setting just use a "Location". Go to System Preferences/Network/Locations, drop down menu to Edit, click ADD(+). Type in a name you want and then it will give you a blank slate to start a new network setting. Go to Configure IPv4 and use the OFF setting and then you won't be on ANY network, Lan or internet. Click APPLY at the bottom to save. Now you can go back to the APPLE Menu/Location and pick the one you had before. I have Locations for Lan DSL, Wireless DSL, Lan, Wireless Lan and OFF.
