Apple have traditionally had a small market share, so have not been a target for viruses, particularly given those who write the viruses do so for notoriety in many cases.
Viruses can be written for any software, including Apple.
Apple have been fortunate in the past, but don't be fooled. If you have an Apple, you are open to viruses, malware and hacker attacks. If you don't have virus protection, you are far more at risk than a Windows PC with virus protection.
