At first no as they are separate technologies (USB- Universal Serial Bus, Firewire- IEEE 1394a/Firewire 400), so you cannot connect a usb to a firewall or visa versa.
There are ways however. These include purchasing two expansion cards (PCI, ISA or SCSI depending on the type and space left on your motherboard). OR purchasing a Hub/adapter that connects in either a USB or Firewire port, and accommodates at least one USB and one Firewire port.
However, there is also a newer type of Firewire (Firewire 800) which is under the standard of IEEE 1894b. This offers double the speed in transfer compared to the IEEE 1394a, however neither a USB cable of anytype (USB, or USB 2.0) or Firewire 1394a cable can fit into a 1894b port or visa versa. There may well be hubs/adapters for these too.
USB and Firewire- Both are Serial Ports. Both offering Plug and Play/Hot Swapping capabilities (Depending on your Computer's hardware and software).
Hope this Helps

It depends what you want to connect to the Mac. It could be the FireWire socket, a USB socket, or the DVI port .

To connect a Canon ZR40 to a computer, use a FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable to connect the camcorder's DV output to the FireWire port on your computer. If your computer lacks a FireWire port, you may need a FireWire to USB adapter or a compatible capture card. Once connected, turn on the camcorder and set it to the playback mode. You can then use video editing software to capture or transfer the footage from the camcorder to your computer.
