It is best to use "hibernate." That saves everything to the hard drive and shuts the system down, saving energy. It will boot back in a few seconds to wherever you left it. Standby is OK for short periods, but it uses more energy. More importantly, if there is a power fluctuation, the system will simply shut down and you will lose whatever you are working on.

Well its hard to asess because ethier or, could work. Personally i leave my computer in standby mode most of the time. But there are some times that you will need to shut down and it is a healthly choice to shut down the computer every now and then like maybe every second day?
