Yes, it is safe to leave your computer in sleep mode, inside a backpack. The key words here are "powered on", however. Several things can cause the laptop to turn on inside a backpack. My laptop, for example, does not snap shut securely, and occasionally the screen pops up just enough in my bag to wake it up. Recently it caused hardware failure, and I have to send it in now (Its brand new, BTW). The fan output was too hot to even tough. Any number of other things can cause it to wake up on it's own. For example, if the WiFi device detects a new network, it may wake the operating system to configure it, which would overheat the computer very quickly. Even something like bumping the CD/DVD eject button could in theory cause the OS to wake up. I'd shut the computer down completely (I would NOT recommend hibernating-- Its still buggy and you may wake your computer up to have it in a boot loop) If you're going to leave it stored on it's own battery power for any length of time, or if you plan to remove the battery, or work on it in any way make sure you shut it down completely.
The invention of the backpack is important because it helps you carry your items around from place to place without problems.....
To adjust the length of backpack straps without cutting them, look for adjustable buckles or sliders on the straps. Simply slide the buckle or adjust the slider to make the straps longer or shorter as needed. This allows you to customize the fit of the backpack without permanently altering the straps.
You can run it until the processor overheats and shuts down which will not take long. Eventually the processor ECU will fail due to overheating and you will be replacing it.
