You can teach rats tricks, you can litter train rats, you can carry a rat around on your shoulder, a rat can get along with other pets as long as they are not smaller than the rat. The only good thing about a hamster compared to a rat, is that its not as demanding of your attention.
It really depends on what trick you want it to do. As i dont have pet gerbils, i reallycant help. Sorry!!
leave it at home or teach it one trick every day
It's very easy to play with your pet rat. You can just carry him around or try to teach him tricks. You can also hold them for a little while or give them little treats. You can put a treat next to him and when he gets near it move it away. Continue doing it for a minute then finally give it to him. I do this with my rat all the time and he loves it. I call it the treat game. You can introduce new toys to your rat and tease him with it. He will have alot of fun with that. You can make up your own games too. No matter what you do with your rat, always try new games so he doesn't get bored.
It depends what you call a "simple trick." My sister has a rat, who "taught" her to always watch TV around lunchtime because it makes the rat dance around the cage!
