Boon vs Bane

Simply put a boon is a "blessing. A bane is "something causing misery."

So, is a computer a boon or a bane?

I believe that it is a boon. Think about all the opportunities a computer has created, think about how much easier life is with the computer. Because of computers I can:

• find an answer on answers.com easily,
• answers.com exists because of a computer
• get money from the bank without having to stand in line and wait for a teller to open up.
• go shopping without money in my wallet
• take a college course without having to sit in a classroom

Because of computers, the physically challenged can communicate with us and impart their knowledge and insight (e.g. Steven Hawkings). Shared databases and improved communication mean that law enforcement apprehends more criminals. Vast quantities of information of all sorts is at our fingertips.

It is easy to see how much of a blessing the computer has been, as opposed to how much misery it may have caused.

There are three main drawbacks to the utility and convenience provided by computers: their economic effects, their social impact, and their use to cause harm. Of course, any widely used technology is going to have negative consequences. Drugs, cars and guns can kill people when misused. Computers can create and erase employment opportunities, seemingly overnight. They can further erode the benefits of education: an increasingly large number of individuals cannot do simple math without a calculator. They can promote social interaction, but can also foster anonymous disrespect, or engage an entire generation in virtual pursuits that often seem to take precedence over real life concerns. They can extend the reach of criminal activity (fraud, pedophilia) into areas that would normally be difficult to access.

Without intelligent and logical restraints, computers do have the potential for harm, especially since their intricacy (as with much technology) is only barely understood by the vast majority of the people who use them.
