The tables in Word are most often set to break text above and below the table so you will not be able to put your cursor to the right or left of the table. Above and below should work fine but you will have to put paragraphs there.
If you make the table narrower you should be able to move it by dragging with your mouse (use the four way arrow icon just to the upper left of the top of the table).
Switch on view of the "nonprinting characters" (it is a button that looks like a backwards P on the "Home" ribbon). then you can see all the spaces, tabs, line breaks and paragraph marks in your document.
If I put a table at the beginning of my document I cannot write text above it without moving the table.
