You can use your own but you have to call GVTC to get it set up. If you change your own router with another one it will not work until you call tech support. I haven't ever seen a provider like this before. When we want to network a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) for camera systems we can't login to the router and open ports on our own. We have to call their tech support and give them the public ip so they can open the ports we need opened. It's a gift and a curse. When it works the first time it's awesome, when it doesn't it sucks. We just had to beg a tech to look further into our cameras not coming up, he finally did and saw a setting was wrong. Fixed it and all was good, but at first he said everything was correct and that it was something on our end... sorry to ramble but just know you have to call tech for any new router or router swap.
