it is probably a good idea. i got a warranty for my iphone, and it will be a much better deal just in case something happens to it, i can get a brand new one for free. if i had not have gotten that, if something might have happened to my iPhone, i would have had to buy a brand new one. so, yes, that might be a good idea... especially if you consider yourself a klutz, or you are likely to mess it up in any way, shape, or form. i hope this helps!
To get an Apple warranty, you can purchase an Apple product, which typically comes with a standard one-year limited warranty. You can also buy AppleCare+, an extended warranty and support plan, either at the time of purchase or within 60 days afterward. To check if your device is still under warranty, visit the Apple Support website and enter your device's serial number. Always keep your receipt or proof of purchase for warranty claims.

Almost any laptop purchased, including those purchased specifically for student usage, come with the option to purchase an additional extended warranty. Smoking near ANY computer will coat the internal hardware (and outside) with the same tar and nicotine that goes into your lungs. You would have to be a heavy smoker in a small room to really do any major damage though. Ask any computer repair shop and they can usually tell within a few minutes of opening it if you are a smoker. The dust can actually stick to the hardware enough that even if you blow it out it will still leave a fair amount behind.
If the computer is still under it's original 1-year warranty, you can still sign up for the AppleCare Protection Plan for it.

The standard variety for a SONY lap top computer is one year. This is the warranty for Dell as well. Apple's might be the same, but it could last longer.
Because Apple uses a closed architecture computer system, you cannot build an Apple system without using parts purchased from reputable Authorized Apple Resellers. Taking apart/building your own Apple system is not covered by Apple's warranty.
If you are referring to where you can purchase one, I would start at your local Apple Store.
