From your description, it seems like the taskbar has simply increased in size due to an unintended drag/resize action. Follow the steps detailed below:

  • Right-click on an empty area on your taskbar
  • Make sure there is NO tick next to "lock the taskbar". If there is, click on it and it shall go away.
  • Now you may have observed that going to the edge of your taskbar changes the mouse pointer from a large white arrow into a black double-headed arrow.
  • When you see this arrow, press and hold the left mouse button and then move/drag your mouse towards the edge of your screen, thus reducing the size of your taskbar.
  • When you are happy with the size, right click on the taskbar again, and this time, click on "Lock the taskbar" to prevent further accidental resizing.
