However big it says on the tin! 8 bits (characters) make one byte. One thousand and twenty four bytes make a kilobyte. One thousand and twenty four kilobytes make a megabyte. One thousand and twenty four megabytes make a gigabyte. That is a lot of characters that can be stored on one gig of RAM!
Assuming you are buying RAM here is a rough guide for the minimum amount you want: 2Gb for vista, 1Gb for Mac OSX, 512Mb for Linux or Xp. Hope that helps!
