I have not yet found different way to do this. I have no idea if DVDs are not bordered, I've only used my Akai player for divx movies. The solution I've found is to download a program called AddXSubs. In this program you can set your subtitle as you want (color, border, position, size,...) and then burn subtitels into the movie. Works wonders :)
