Bummer, sounds like yo need to install a device driver for your soundcard.
If you have a brand name PC you can probably get it from the manufacturers website. If you don't then you'll need to find out what model soundcard you've got. Download Craig Hart's PCI32 diagnostics to find out.

The problem probably started due to driver incompatibilities. I had a similar one when I installed a new graphics card and updated drivers.
Start up your computer and go to your BIOS (hold down the key to go to 'Setup').
Go to Onboard Audio and switch from Auto to Enabled (or perhaps viceversa).
This is what worked for me. Credit goes to the good people at the Nvidia forums. Good luck.
You need to install drivers for your soundcard and then set it as default audio device from the control panel.
Control panel > System > Hardware > Device manager > Sound, video and game controllers > right click on your audio device > Uninstall
Start->Control Panel->Sound and Audio Device Properties, locate the tab "Sounds" and choose sounds for the operations which you want to play sounds when you start it.
Go to the control panel and troubleshoot it.
Computer/control panel/devices/hardware & sound/manage sound. Strt there & look for error codes.
the sound card, speaker ,drivers and settings at control panel ( volume controls or the computer's audio settings)
Computer/Control panel and in vista there is an icon for mouse, click there to adjust settings. Or if you have a different op, control panel, device manager, look for your mouse in list.
Look up the model of your computer on the internet, a page should explain the specs and show your device. Or try Device Manager from Control Panel (Windows)
Go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager and click on the CD ROM. It will say what type it is. This is for Windows VISTA. XP is I believe Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager.
You have to go in the control panel and make sure that the Bluetooth device is listed on the device manager.
Guessing a compatibility issue. Go to control panel > view devices and printers > device manager and check for updates for the USB drives
System May be MUTED. Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices then Unmute under Volume.
