The following applies to Windows XP and below only. First, open My Computer. Then, right click the icon of the hard drive and choose 'Properties' from the menu that appears. On this screen there will be a pie chart which shows how much free space (pink) there is compred to how much space is used (blue). To get the exact figure, look above at the key which states how many bytes and gigabytes are free on your hard drive.
For those running Windows Vista, it is even easier: open Computer from the desktop or start menu, and on the window that appears, under the drive named BOOT there should be text telling you how many gigabytes are free, and how many gigabytes your hard drive can hold in total.
The computers that cannot boot are usually newer models. Since the floppy drive has so little space available for data storage, it is outdated and not usually necessary on modern computers.
to transfer files to different computers (or extra storage space)
Left click the icon of the drive, a menu will pop up. At the bottom of the menu, there is one that says "Properties". Click on Properties, and information about the drive, such as space available, will be displayed.
The space reserved for virtual memory varies on different computers. It depends on the operating system in use and how much system memory is available.
Your mom's mom.. grandmother.
For hard drive space, it is not only possible, but is the norm for today's computers. Desktop computers do not have the physical space for the sticks of RAM that would be required for 100 GB's worth. Many servers do, however.

2000 Gigabytes
I have a Hp pavillion with XP operating system. After my computer crashed, I used an XP operating disc to get it back up and running. Now my local disc (H:) drive appears to be my primary drive. But it has 7.59 GB of used space and only 423 MB of free space. My local disc (C:) drive has 1.48 GB of used space with 178 GB of free space. I get message stating that my memory is low on the local (H:) drive. Used disk clean up that only free up KB.
The largest "stock" memory card on Toshiba branded computers is 2 Terra Bytes aka 2000 gigabytes. It is important to remember that hard drive (memory) space tends to vary but will always meet the minimum requirements set out by the manufacturer (for example a 2tb hard drive with 2158 gigabytes of space).
