You get a vaccine for that particular virus. However, this only works before hand. Vaccines are weakened or dead viruses injected into your body so your immune system can create antibodies to stop you from getting the real thing.

There are a number of routes a virus can enter your computer.

The more common ones are:

1. email attachments - you should have email scanning on and regularly update your antivirus software. You should also have an effective firewall.

2. Music codecs from unknown surces which you download and install. Recently many trojans have been doing the rounds as codecs. That is one way to target Macintosh computers. Whether pcs or macs the installer asks you for your password and that is how the Trojan gets it.

3. Visiting pornographic and gaming sites.

4. Downloading software indiscriminately and installing it. There is this serious problem with pcs. In mac or Linux you are able to authenticate the integrity of a downloaded file through md5 or other hexadecimal strings or better still by gpg signature. These authenticatin methods are generall not available for PC downloads.

5. Phishing scams - confirm your bank details, you've won money, help to retrieve money and so on. Don't be tempted by them, delete them and send them to phishing database.

6. Using rogue anti-malware and registry cleaners for pcs.

Once you get a sophisticated Trojan it is very difficult to get rid of it without wiping the hdd completely. Since new malware is appearing all the time and it can be included in the databases of av companies only after it has been found which means that some of the computers are infected before its spread can be controlled. But if you have av software with serious heuristic capability you are less likely to fall victom to it.
