The original Apple Macintosh was revolutionary in several ways. The first being that it brought a graphic user interface (GUI) to the public in a reasonably affordable device. It was not the first GUI computer, but the first to move its user base from the command-line interface of the PC and other computing platforms.

The Mac brought the concept of folders to the screen in place of directories in the command-line. The Mac also was the first successful computer to utilize a pointing device, the mouse. It allowed many people who were afraid of learning the command-line to use a computer with exceptional ease-of-use. And as the original Macintosh was an "all-in-one" design, set up was simple.

The Apple Macintosh changed the game. Microsoft had to bring out Windows to keep their market share. And even though it was several versions before Microsoft really had a competitive version of Windows, they were able to keep the lion share of the market due to their entrenched business users. PC clones also brought the cost of PC's down tremendously compared to Apple products.

Windows users are indebted to Apple for bringing the Mac to the market. The competition made Microsoft improve their products in the long run.
