There is a dominant female who runs the gang. She selects a male to be the dominant male. None of the other males or females are allowed to have pups or even mate, except for these two. After the dominant male and female mate, she gives birth to a litter of, on average, about seven pups. The pups cannot leave the safety of the underground burrow for several weeks or else they would die, and keeping the adventurous creatures from venturing out can be quite a hassle, so while the other adults are off foraging for food (which the mother will bring some back for the pups), one adult stays behind (getting no meal for the day) and watches the pups. Babysitting duties rotates. When the pups are old enough, they can go outside, but are not allowed to leave the line of sight of the babysitter. When they are even older, they are still small and young, but are actually allowed to leave and forage with the adults.
