This isn't a scientifically proven answer, by any means, but as someone who has been fixing Macs for many years, I can report that, anecdotally, the two most common causes of accidental damage to Apple portables are:
- Liquid spill - usually into the keyboard, usually (but not always) involving alcohol.
- Impact damage - usually (but not always) resulting in a cracked or shattered LCD screen.
Some of the other causes I've seen are: rage (computer intentionally slammed/broken, or thrown out of a moving car window), forgetfulness (left it closed on the floor by the bed & stepped on it, left it on top of a car while packing other stuff & forgot it was there before pulling away), and even target practice (BB gun or throwing knife impact on the display).
