Rats have sharp claws that they can use for burrowing or feeding, and sharp teeth. Most species of pet rats tend not to be aggressive, but larger wild rats can be vicious if hungry or cornered, and their bites can become infected.

The mother sits on the nest and keeps the babies warm and also breastfeeds them. She makes sure they stay in the nest until they are old enough to venture out on their own (when their eyes have opened.) They begin to see their mother eating solid food and try it themselves. At about 3 weeks, they are old enough to eat solid food and to be separated from their mother.
