The Nook is normally updated over a WiFi network and does not need to be connected to a computer. If the update does not happen automatically you may need to tap 'Check for new B&N content' in the My Library area in order to initiate the update.
If the update has to be done manually you need to download the update from the Barnes and Noble support web site. Connect the Nook to the Mac with a USB cable. The Nook will appear on the Mac's Desktop (or in a Finder Window under Devices) as a disc. Drag the update file into the top level of the Nook (not into any folders). The update will be automatically recognised and applied. The Nook will restart once it has finished installing the update.
