You can change the width of a column several ways. The two most common methods are:
When you select a column header in Excel, all the cells in that column are selected. This means 65536 cells (the maximum number of rows in Excel). Similarly, if you select a row header, this will select 256 cells (the maximum number of columns in Excel). In terms of the worksheet, there are 1,048,576 rows on a single worksheet in Excel 2007. If you are talking about how many will appear on a single page when printing, that will depend on how you scale your page and things like the size of the rows or your text. It might be 20 rows, it could be 50 rows. The way you have your page or printer set can also affect the amount of rows on a page. So there is no single answer to the question. In terms of the worksheet, there are 1,048,576 rows on a single worksheet in Excel 2007. The max columns on an excel 2007 sheet are 16k. The max rows are 1M. In excel 2003 the max columns are 256 and max rows of 64k.
The number of cells in one column depends on the size and configuration of the spreadsheet. In Excel, for example, a standard column typically contains 1,048,576 cells.
Individual cell sizes cannot be changed. You have to change the width of all cells in a column or the height of all cells in a row. You can do this by putting the cursor between the headers on the rows or columns and then dragging. You can also set specific values through the Row Height and Column Width options which you can find as part of the formatting options.
The maximum worksheet size is: 1,048,576 rows (across) by 16,384 columns (down). That is 17,179,852,800 cells.
Cells in the same column must the be same width. You can make some higher than others, by adjusting their row size, but that is the only size difference there can be between cells in the same column. See the related question below for changing row and column sizes.
When you first open a new worksheet, rows are the same height (15) and columns are the same width (8.43). You can change each individual row height and column width to the size that meets your needs.
Change the font size of the content of the cell.
Autofit allows you to change both columns and rows in a single location. ;) ♥
In the Excel spreadsheet versions prior to 2002 or Office XP there are 65,536 rows and 256 columns , 65,536 x 256 = 16,777,216 cells or 'boxes'. Later versions of Excel have far more - millions of rows and thousands of columns. EDIT The latest version of Microsoft Excel that comes with Office 2007 has 17,179,869,184 cells in all. The columns are letter all the way to XFD and there are 1,048,576 rows.
