The default background in Scratch is the white stage. Click on the white Stage icon in the lower right hand box. The central editing area then changes with three tabs across the top - Scripts, Backgrounds and Sounds. Select the Backgrounds tab and click the Import button and you can choose from the Scratch backgrounds or any picture on your computer. The Paint button gives you a simple painting window to paint your own background. If your computer has a webcam the Camera button takes a picture with the camera to use as a background.
