Double click the home screen button, touch and hold the app you want to close, a red minus sign will appear in the icon, just touch it.

my home button is broken to but if i to close an app i use the asistive touch witch lets you use the home button just by going on to it and tapping home you turn it on in settings-general-accessibility- and turn the assistive touch on then a dot will appare on your screen tap it press device then rotate screen and you done

That would depend on which iPod you're talking about. I have a iPod Touch. To close it, just continuously press the On/Off button on the top left of the iPod. To force close it, hold both the home screen button (located at the bottom middle of the iPod) and the On/Off button at the same time for about 10 seconds.
