Creating games can be done by an individual programmer, thus having to have knowledge of a programming language is essential in creating games. Usually games are created by a team of people, designers, programmers, sound engineers etc however I learnt by practising (alot) myself. Programming languages such as C++, Java, Flash, C# are popular for creating games because of their speed and rich features. Although generally from a programming language all you need to create a game is to detect input (mouse, keyboard), draw to the screen quickly (for the user to see), and graphics. This depending on how complex you want the game to be. More complex games require a team of people.
Maths is really important for creating games, I can not emphasise this enough.
