In Mac OS X 10.4, click the Dashboard icon to launch Dashboard, then click the circle icon with the + symbol in the lower left of the screen to see the widget bar. You will notice that there are now circle icons with x in them on the top left corners of the displayed widgets. To remove a widget from view, simply click that x icon. Alternatively, you can click the manage widgets... button to disable existing or download new widgets.

A "Widget" is an application that runs in a very small window within the "Dashboard" operating space. Dashboard shows all the running Widgets in one window. Pressing F4 will open the dashboard operation space. Widgets usually do one thing very well, like tell you the weather or the lyrics to the song that is playing.
