On each Hard-disk, CD-Player, Component of your computer you will find information in as to how many watts of power they consume.

It may be printed on components but more typically in the user-guide accompanying it.

The processor is a separate component of which can draw as much as 130 Watts, although mostly 65-95 watts.

When you have calculated together All the wattage from all different components in your computer, then you know the absolute minimum power your computer can be started with.

A computer these days typically spend 300 watts or more. Only some screen-cards may eat as much as 300 watts. lol

If you have many Hard-disks in your system, then the Watt Drain at start is a lot more than your calculated wattage. This because they consume a lot more when starting to spin up.

In a normal computer system I would not use a power supply that is less than 20% above calculated power drain. Some computer systems with many Hard-disks does not start unless you have 50% more than actually needed.

Why do computers require their own internal Power Supply?

Computers require their own internal power supply because the power required to power most newer computers, especially with high-end graphics cards, would require a bulky power supply which wouldn't be ideal in transporting computers or aesthetically. Also, with all of the other internal parts of a computer, some type of power interface would be necessary within the PC anyway, so why not just bundle it all together?
