Copper XLPE Armoured Power Cables.
XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) resin is a type of thermosetting polymer used in the manufacturing of electrical cables. It offers high thermal and chemical resistance, excellent electrical properties, and low water absorption. XLPE resin is commonly used in medium to high voltage power cables for transmission and distribution of electricity.
The maximum operating temperature for submarine XLPE cables is typically around 90 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature for operation would be around -15 to -20 degrees Celsius. These temperature ranges ensure that the cables can function effectively in various marine environments.
The higher voltage drop in XLPE cables compared to PVC cables is due to the different electrical properties of the materials. XLPE has a lower dielectric constant and higher resistivity than PVC, leading to a higher internal resistance and therefore higher voltage drop. Additionally, XLPE cables usually have a higher operating temperature, which can also contribute to increased voltage drop.

The full form of XLPE is Cross-Linked Polyethylene. XLPE is a type of polyethylene in which the polymer chains are chemically linked, or cross-linked, to improve its thermal and mechanical properties. This cross-linking enhances the material's resistance to heat, pressure, and environmental stress, making it suitable for use in insulation for high-voltage cables and wires.
Its depending on cable dimension, current carring capacity and soil thermal resistivity.
In the context of electrical cables, PVC and XLPE are two materials used as insulation. XLPE has got more capacity to hold on incase of high temperature. XLPE will not deteriorate it's insulating property until it reaches 90 degree celsius. It will not suddenly lose it's insulating property if the themperature jumps just above 90. But the overall life of the cable will be reduced. PVC can withstand temperatures only upto 70 degree Celsius. PVC is cheaper than XPLE, hence it's find it's place in market today. PVC is a thermo plastic where as XLPE is thermosetting plastic. PVC - Poly Vinyl chloride XLPE - Cross linked Poly Ethylene
Smicon uses XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable due to its superior electrical properties, thermal resistance, and mechanical strength. XLPE cables can withstand higher temperatures and provide excellent insulation, making them suitable for various applications, including power transmission and distribution. Additionally, they have a longer lifespan and better resistance to environmental stressors, enhancing reliability and reducing maintenance costs.
One disadvantage of XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable is its higher cost compared to other insulation materials, such as PVC, which can make it less economical for certain applications. Additionally, XLPE cables can be more rigid and less flexible, making installation more challenging in tight spaces. They may also be susceptible to damage from UV exposure if not properly protected, potentially reducing their lifespan in outdoor applications.
XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable is known for its excellent thermal and electrical properties, making it suitable for high-voltage applications and environments with high temperatures. PUR (polyurethane) cable, on the other hand, is highly flexible and resistant to abrasion, chemicals, and oil, making it ideal for dynamic and harsh conditions. While XLPE cables are primarily used for power transmission, PUR cables are often utilized in robotics, automation, and mobile applications where flexibility is crucial. Both materials serve different purposes based on their unique properties.
