The answer depends some on WHY your computer will not let you in. If you are just locked out because you entered your password wrong too many times or because you forgot your password, there are two possible solutions. The best is to go into an administrator account and reset the user account. If you do not have administrator rights on your computer, you will have to go to someone who does in order to do the reset. The alternative is to get some software that is designed to allow recovering or resetting passwords. Some good ones that you can get for free for Windows systems are:

  • Ophcrack - lets you crack the password - so if the password is secure, it may not be able to recover it
  • Offline NT Password & Registry Editor - this is a password reset only
  • PC Login Now - deletes deletes your password, allowing you to access Windows without a password, after which you can create a new one.
  • Kon-Boot - does both reset and possibly recovery of weaker passwords
  • Cain & Abel - password recovery - as long as your password can be cracked
  • LCP - another password recovery tool
  • John the Ripper - another password recovery tool

Apple includes a Reset Password utility on the Mac OS X Install DVD that shipped with the computer. You may also be able to do a reset on Mac OS 9 systems using the install disk for that OS.

I have also attached a link to an explanation of a way to reset the root password on a Linux system.
