If you have rats in your home, it is because they are finding easy access to food within or around your home. To eliminate them is a series of "little steps" that will add up to a rat-free environment. First of all, make an inch-by-inch inspection of both the the interior and exterior foundation of your home. A rat can easily squeeze through a hole or crack 3/4" in diameter.

If you find any, fill the hole with steel wool, and then seal it from both sides (ordinary caulk is fine). Make sure you are putting ALL of your household garbage in plastic bags that you can seal shut with twist ties, or the like. Keep your kitchen scrupulosity clean - right down to crumbs.

If you still find them in the house, trap them with rat traps (NOT mouse traps - a rat will shrug those off easily) Peanut butter or a scrap of bacon is the best bait. If the problem is more in your outbuildings or barn - get a "barn" cat - or two. That will work well.
