i am presuming you are talking about adobe flash or other adobe program On the left of the 'timeline' it will show the layers and their names, above this there will be a bar with an eye, a padlock and an empty square, directly below each symbol there will either be a dot or a coloured square for each layer. if you click the eye shape then all layers will be hidden but if you click the dot below it then that layer will be hidden. The same applies for the padlock and the square. The padlock locks layers and the square shows outlines. i find the best way to learn how to use these programs is to experiment.
