some are better than others for different applications

for example .gif is far better than .jpeg for a page of text ,graphs, line art, lithographs

a picture of a flower bed with many colors looks far better with jpeg

the flowers have fewer defined pixels and kind of smears the colors between the pixels jpeg

the gif defines every pixel as one or another color in rll encode( ie 100white 4 black 200w 6b 1000w) no dither or smear .gif png

for video i think the best at the moment is .mkv

if you like music .midi is very compact and the instruments sound better every month
