In VLC Player, you can play a selection by first highlighting the specific segment of a video using the playback slider. To play only that segment, right-click on the video and select "Playback," then choose "Jump to Specific," where you can enter the start and end times. Alternatively, you can use the "Record" feature to capture a segment while it plays. Finally, save your selection as a new file if desired.
