On most fax machines, to send a fax you need to:
1) Make sure that the fax machine is properly connected to the phone line and powered on
2) Put the fax you want to send into the document feeder
3) Dial the number you want to fax to
4) Press send
5) Wait for confirmatoin of the fax being sent.
The BT DF50 is an older model, and the user manual for that specific model is difficult to find.
Most BT Fax machines were rebranded from another manufacturer's product (for example Brother, Xerox, Canon, HP, etc.) finding the parallel user manual may make the process easier.
