The easiest way to underline words in a Word document or online, is to press CTRL and U at the same time, after you have highlighted what you want to underline. This is the general shortcut key for many word processors.

One can underline a word in Microsoft Word by first typing out the word, select the word with the mouse, on the top of the Word program. look for the icons BUI for Bold Underline and Italics, and select "U", this will underline the word.
