It could be frozen. So to unfreeze press and hold the center button and the menu button until you see an apple appear on the screen. Then once you see the apple, press and hold the center button and the pause/play button. It should unfreeze (if that's your problem) and be back to normal! (For additional help, search 'How to unfreeze a frozen i-pod nano' on Youtube---that's what I did when that happened to me---) :)
