Blender is one of the more popular programs for 3D animation, and it's what movie studios like Pixar use. It is fairly difficult to learn, however, but if you do, you could do just about anything with it.

Some major movie studios in the United States that use 3D animation are Pixar, DreamWorks, Walt Disney, Blue Sky, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Vanguard Animation, and Aardman. There are also smaller studios in the U.S.A. and international movie studios that use 3D animation.
You can use Blender.
CGI animation already gives off a 3D look. 3D animation wouldn't be successful without traditional animation.
Both are bachelor degrees but 3D animation degree is specialization in 3D Character animation, 3D rendering, creating 3D models etc.

There are a lot of 3D animation software out there but IllusionMage is the best. Its easy to use, comes with step by step tutorials making it so anyone can learn. It has more feature Maya or 3D Max (other software's)
3D modeling
There are a good amount of 3D animation films available. The best 3D animation films are "EPIC", "Monsters Vs. Aliens", and the amazing movie "Avatar".
I vote on Studio Max for 3D and Pixar for 2D
Generally speaking, no. 3D animation is achieved with 3D animation software and scripts. The software may be largely implemented in C++, but that's not the same thing as creating 3D animations.
