The bios reports errors on the start-up screen. Simply white on black. It reports any failures to start up correctly, for example if an operating system is not found, or a vital component is not functioning.
If the screen memory or basic video cannot be accessed, the error can be signalled by a series of beeps from the onboard sounder. The exact meanings of the beeps, will have to be looked up in the motherboard instructions.
The BIOS communicates erros druing POST By giving a beep code.
Through a series of audio beeps, different numbers of beeps mean different errors depending on your bios manufacturer.
By using a code of short and long beeps
BIOS
BIOS is software. It tells system software how to communicate with installed hardware. ROM is hardware. It stores a copy of the BIOS, and automatically loads its contents into RAM (the BIOS) when power is first applied to the system. Thus, while the two are related, they are not the same.
It is not known who invented the BIOS of a computer however Gary Kildall is credited with creating the term BIOS in 1975. The BIOS is the first application that loads when the computer is booted up.
the computer tower would send off a series of beeps, each having different meanings depending on the length and amount of tones you hear.
Bios provides the programming that enables the CPU to communicate with other hardware. Referenced from pg 209 in the Mike Meyers compTIA A+ guide to managing and troubleshooting PC's. Bazinga!
