Sometimes outlining, used to organize your ideas when writing for any genre, can be boring and too, a daunting experience if you don't know how to write one to begin with. Mind mapping is fun, because you're not just writing text on paper, you are jotting down your central theme then adding related ideas in whatever shape you want (most people use circles); each shape with idea is connected to the central theme with a line pointing away from it. By mind mapping, you empty your brain of everything you know about the topic you are writing about. Once you've done this, you can go back and group ideas that are similar, remove ideas that are not in line with the topic, and decide which ideas stand out as subtopics of your central theme. With this organization in place, you can then begin writing a more structured outline, i.e. central theme/main ideas, subtopics of central theme, and related ideas that can be inserted to develop the subtopics. In this way, mind mapping prepares you to write an outline easily and without intrepidation.
