The VM is nothing but has same as physical machine minus the Physical hardware required for it to run.

The main advantages are that multiple OS can co-exist on the same computer in strong isolation from each other and tha it can provide an istruction set architecture(ISA) different from that of the real machine.

The main advantage is that you don't have to buy two computers, and you don't have to stand up from one computer and walk to the other (or buy a KVM switch). The only disadvantages are that they are really slow, and not quite as stable.
