They have a different kind of memory they use most often which is mmore instinctive than the brain. They memorize movements, called muscular memory so they can move very rapidly by instinct over established runways. For example, their muscles memorize how many steps they must take before they hit each obstacle etc. when to leap and for how far, since they can barely see (and don't really need to nor have radar like bats)

My dad has seen a rat about the size of a long plank of wood and opossums are smaller than a long plank of wood, usually a few inches bigger than a regular rat. So usually yes, but unless you happen to see a rat bigger than an opossum, that rat has sure lived for a long time.
