The actual making of pane glass is very interesting and involves silica (very pure for sand) and some additives (I think sodium) and is super heated to hotter than hell. IT turns into a red glowing molten goo. Than it laid out and cooled.

Most windows are double pane and have a vacuum or air barrier for energy efficiency.

The frames are often automated now and many are made with plastics and vynals. You can get hand made wood frames but they cost more and really are not as good as the plastics, which seal better.
