For the general population yes, but technically it's 1024 Megabytes to the Gigabyte.

It is commonly thought that also 1000 bytes equal 1 kilobyte. But to explain you must understand that 1 byte contains 8 bits. A bit being the small unit data that makes up all the information stored on your hard-drive. The problem here is that everything has to break evenly into the the number of bits.

8 bit = 1 byte

1,024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (8,192 bits)

1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte (8,388,608 bits)

1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte (8,589,934,592 bits)
