This refers to the density of pixels within a given inch squared of an image. Basically its an easy way to determine the quality of an image without seeing it.

For example if you have a digital photograph that measures 1200 pixels wide X 800 pixels tall and you intended to print it at 12" wide by 8" tall, the pixels per inch would be 100 (usually written as 100ppi).

If you take that same image and decide you want to print it at 18x12, then the pixels per inch would drop to 66.6ppi.

As you can see ppi directly relates to print size.

Pixels don't have a fixed size, it depends on the size of the image. Thus a digital camera with a small receptor may have say 8 megapixels (ie 8 x 106), but then display the same picture on a screen 32 inches wide or even more. You have the same number of pixels, but spread out over a much larger area.

Pixels are just the tiny dots that form images, they are not a form of distance measurement. To demostrate this, take for example a 40 in. TV. That 40 inch TV might contain 1920 x 1080 pixels to make up the screen, but likewise, a computer screen that is only 20 in. can also have the same amount of pixels.
