There are many answers to this questions.

Most IT Directors make a good salary. Some receive a "regular" low salary a regular pay, but can then receive bonus and incentives worth more than their "regular" salary.

Some IT Directors also own their company, and these can earn a lot of money if their product is good, but then when they loose contracts to use their systems, and is stuck with the same consultants and other expenses - they have to pay their salary out of own pocket. So, in those years, they can have a negative salary, loosing money for every day at work. This is the up and downside of being an entrepreneur.
