Norton Antivirus is not free to use indefinitely. However, its parent company, Symantec, is known for distributing free trials of its software so that users can try before they buy it (while the software itself may be free, a subscription to the service is what will eventually need to be purchased). Norton and pretty much all antivirus software give false positives at times. Now it is less common that it happens but people have to understand the enormity of the task. Your antivirus software is searching through millions of characters and thousands of files looking for code that performs a malicious act. That is the equivalent of a person scowering a whole city for one pin. It's a large task and antivirus software are doing things a person could never do.
An antivirus is a program that automatically detects and removes or quarantines all forms of virus, malware, Trojan, spyware etc from your PC. Some examples are Immunet Plus, AVG, Avira, Comodo, MSE etc.

Pretty much any antivirus will do. I use Avast, but AVG, Panda, and others should do fine. I recommend against Norton/Symantec and McAfee, however, as my customers tend to have a LOT of problems with them. Which is ironic, because they are one of the few that cost money.
